Many of the brides and grooms we work with choose New Hampshire’s Lakes Region for their special day because it holds a sentimental place in their heart. Often they spent their summers as a child on the lake; and maybe they continue to visit as an adult. Regardless, the scenery just can’t be beat. Recently, relatives visiting from California used words like ‘lush’ and ‘green’ and ‘scenic’ to describe the natural beauty that engulfs this part of the country.
But you don’t have to have a connection to the area to select this popular vacation destination as the backdrop for your special day. Here are six reasons to consider the Lakes Region for the ultimate destination wedding location:
1. Tranquil Lakes
The vast array of lakes dotting the area provide an anchor for any summertime wedding. Lake Winnipesaukee boasts the title of “largest lake” in the state with 252 islands and a multitude of secluded beaches spreading from Meredith to Alton and up to Wolfeboro, NH, (and everywhere in between). Couples are sure to find the perfect lakeside rental or resort to host their guests. Looking for a smaller, more intimate location? Squam Lake in Holderness, NH, which served as the set for the 1981 film On Golden Pond, and Newfound Lake in Bristol, NH, are just two of the many equally beautiful, smaller lakes to set the mood for your “I dos.”
2. Awe Inspiring Views
Depending on the season, the Lakes Region is flanked by the changing landscape of the White Mountains, the Belknap Range, and Ossipee Mountain Range. Treat your guests to a pre-wedding hike or explore via scenic railroad. You can also take advantage of the colorful fall foliage by reserving the Castle in the Clouds, which offers stunning vistas, as your wedding venue. And don’t forget the sunsets. Depending on the time of year, New England can offer some amazing technicolor sunsets; dazzling for your guests to view and your photographer to capture.
3. Lush Gardens
If you are planning a summertime garden wedding, the Lakes Region won’t disappoint. From the beautifully landscaped town centers and resorts, to an array of local florists and garden centers skilled in crafting the perfect centerpieces, your wedding day is sure to be full of color. For those looking for a venue entrenched in the beauty of flowers, trees, and shrubs, the meticulously tended Kirkwood Gardens is a unique space featuring a pergola and bluestone patio perfect for both a ceremony and reception.
4. Sounds of the Night
From the sound of spring “peepers” to the chirp of summertime crickets, the night is filled with many sounds of nature (a nice reprieve from the sounds of the city). The lakes also serve as a springtime nesting spot for loons who serenade the Region all summer and into the fall.
5. The Night Sky
There is nothing like watching the sun melt into the lake, or the magic of dancing under a sky full of stars (something you can see when you are miles away from the bright lights of the big city)! In the state of New Hampshire, fireworks are not only for the 4th of July, but a weekend display around the lakes throughout the summer. Weirs Beach, located on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, coordinates a display most Friday nights throughout the summer. Depending on your wedding location, you may be allowed to host your own fireworks display (consumer grade fireworks are legal in NH). Make sure you check your venue’s rules and regulations and local ordinances beforehand.
6. Outdoor Adventures
Destination weddings provide an opportunity for friends and family to enjoy more than just the wedding. The following activities could just be “the icing on the cake.” Here are few ideas:
- Treat your wedding party to breathtaking views while exploring treetops via zip line at Gunstock Mountain Resort.
- Gather the flower girl and ring bearer and head to the Squam Lake Science Center to visit the mountain lions and explore the new outdoor playscape.
- Schedule a private SUP (stand up paddleboard) yoga session with a local yoga instructor for you and your bridal party (yes, the men and ladies will enjoy this).
- Book a cruise around Lake Winnipesaukee aboard the MS Mount Washington.
- Having a winter wedding? A day of skiing at one of the area’s ski mountains could be a fun way to start or wrap up your wedding weekend. Gunstock in Gilford, NH; Ragged Mountain in Danbury; and Loon Mountain in Lincoln are some of the areas best ski resorts.
Destination weddings are still all the rage for today’s weddings. If you’re looking for sand and sun, beautiful scenery, tranquility, and adventures and fun for your guests, then look no further than New Hampshire’s Lake Region for your destination wedding location. Happy planning!
