It was great to connect with other New Hampshire vendors at The Knot Event. Not only did we meet some amazing event designers, cake makers, and florists, we also got a chance to reconnect with some of our regular contacts. More importantly, we learned of many growing wedding trends. Here are five trends that caught our eyes.
Natural Charm
The woodland wedding theme is here to stay, but it’s a different, fresher version of the “Rustic Chic” looks of the past. Ivory tones, wood textures, and natural settings are all important parts of this new take on a popular theme. When looking at vendors, it’s important to let them know your vision. A rental company might have the perfect farm tables, cross back chairs or wine barrel bar you’re wanting for your woodland themed reception.
Beautiful Blooms
One tradition that always shines through? Flowers, flowers, flowers! Floral design is a huge part of any big day, but flowers continue to gain popularity for many weddings. Look for floral arrangements to be used in different locations and different ways: hanging from garlands, flowing off a table onto the floor, or used to decorate food (and even be eaten!). We saw many examples of beautiful flowing centerpieces that became the focus of the table. If this appeals to you, it is important to make sure you leave enough space for this look to work without making guests feel like they are sitting in a jungle. If the standard 30 inch width of a rectangular table seems too cramped, you can request a wider table so guests don’t feel encumbered.
Colors that Pop!
Vibrant colors are the new “black!” The best thing about a brightly colored theme is that these cheerful hues can easily be carried throughout the event. Use bright colors for food, flowers, accents, linens, and even invitations. Ask your vendor if they offer a choice of colors to match your decor. Sometimes rental companies keep a fairly neutral inventory to be able to meet the majority of client needs, but you might be able to provide a bright accent to complement a neutral backdrop. For example, you could provide paper lanterns in a color you prefer for the vendor to hang, or request a variety of napkin colors to brighten up tables.
Two for One: The Party and the After Party
Some brides are looking to keep the party going by offering an “after party” to follow the formal reception. This more casual gathering can be for all guests, close friends and family, or guests who could not be factored into the formal event. The hitch? Some venues only allow you a certain amount of time in the function hall or on the property. Renting a tent can solve this problem, because you usually have a tent set up for at least a full evening. You can keep the party going for no extra cost!
Plug In or Unplug?
With the growing use of cell phone texting, YouTube uploads, Facebook, and Twitter, you may want to think about whether or not you want your whole day updated live on social media, or would you prefer having guests keep their mobile devices tucked away? Some modern couples are creating their own #hashtags and asking to be tagged in all posts, even offering charging stations for guests whose smart phone batteries are getting low. On the other end of the spectrum, some couples are requesting a “device check” right next to the coat check, so that guests aren’t tempted to post photos and updates during the first dance, cake cutting, or bouquet toss. As a bride, it is best to let vendors and guests know ahead of time what to expect for your big day. This way your preferences will be respected.
Hope this gives you some new ideas to make your wedding spectacular, modern, and successful. It’s amazing how the same industry can change so much from year to year. But one thing remains the same, every vendor’s goal is to meet the needs of their clients and capture their vision the best they can. Knowing what you want and expressing your vision to your vendors so they can help you make that dream a reality is key.
